Physical Sensation of a Craving

We often talk about cravings as mental events—a "desire" or a "thought." But for anyone who has lived through a nicotine urge, you know that it's a deeply physical experience. A craving has a location, a texture, and a weight. Learning how to identify where you feel a craving in your body is a powerful CBT skill that allows you to neutralize the urge by stripping it of its emotional power.

Mapping the Urge

Where do you feel the hit? For some, it's a tightness in the chest or a knot in the stomach. For others, it's a restlessness in the hands or a dry, hollow feeling in the throat. By "mapping" your cravings, you’re engaging your rational brain and becoming an observer of your addiction rather than a victim of it. You’re not "dying for a hit"; you’re experiencing a temporary physical sensation of tightness in your chest.

The "Body Scan" Technique

When an urge hits, close your eyes and do a quick "body scan." Start at your head and move down to your toes. Notice any tension, any warmth, any restlessness. Don't try to change the sensation; just label it. "I feel a buzzing in my head. I feel a knot in my stomach." This act of labeling creates a "cognitive distance" between you and the urge. It’s no longer an emergency; it’s just data.

Neutralizing the Sensation

  • Describe the Texture: Is the craving sharp? Dull? Heavy? Light? By describing it in physical terms, you're removing its psychological "threat" level.
  • Breathe Into the Sensation: Use UNBRKN's breathing tools to send oxygen to the area where you feel the urge. Imagine the breath softening the tightness or calming the restlessness.
  • Use UNBRKN's Body Sensations Log: The app's Craving Mode explicitly asks you to identify where you feel the urge. This structured awareness is a key part of breaking the automatic loop of reaction.
